Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

A traditional Catholic prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, asking Christ for humility, trust, protection, consolation and the grace to live according to His will.

The Prayer

O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore You, I love You, and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer You this poor heart of mine.

Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to Your will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in You and for You.

Protect me in the midst of danger. Comfort me in my afflictions. Give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death.

Amen.

About This Prayer

The Sacred Heart of Jesus points us toward the love of Christ: a love that gives itself completely, shows mercy to sinners and remains close to us in suffering. In this traditional prayer, we do more than ask Jesus for help. We offer Him our own hearts and ask that our lives become more closely united to His.

The prayer moves through adoration, repentance, surrender and trust. We ask Jesus to make us humble and obedient to His will, to remain with us in danger and affliction, and ultimately to lead us toward eternal life.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

Scripture to Pray With

  • Matthew 11:28-29 Jesus invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Him and describes Himself as meek and humble of heart.
  • John 19:33-34 At the Crucifixion, the side of Jesus is pierced, and blood and water flow from it, an image closely associated with devotion to His Sacred Heart.
  • John 15:9 Jesus tells His disciples that He loves them with the love He has received from the Father and calls them to remain in His love.

When to Pray the Sacred Heart Prayer

Pray this prayer when you need to entrust something to Jesus, when you are carrying fear or suffering, when you are asking for help in a difficult situation, or when you simply want to grow closer to Christ.

It can also become part of your daily prayer. You do not need to wait until something is wrong. Returning regularly to the Sacred Heart is a way of learning to place your plans, worries, work and relationships into the hands of Christ.
