Prayer for My Children
An Original Prayer
Lord, You gave me these children before I knew how to raise them, and some days I still don’t. Watch over them when I cannot. Guard them in the ordinary hours I don’t get to see.
Give me patience on the hard days and gratitude on the easy ones, and let me remember they are Yours before they are mine. Teach them to know You, even through my own mistakes. Let them always find their way back to You, and back home.
Amen.
About this prayer
Also an original prayer, not a historic text, written for the specific, quiet worry of parenting: the awareness that you cannot watch your children every hour, and the hope that God does. It echoes Isaiah’s promise that “all your children shall be taught by the Lord” (Isaiah 54:13), a reminder that a parent’s job is real but not the whole story.
It’s meant to be short enough to pray in the doorway of a child’s room at night, or in the car after dropping them off somewhere you can’t follow.
When to pray it
At bedtime, over a sleeping child, before they leave for school or a first sleepover, or in any of the small moments a parent hands their child over to a day they can’t fully control.
