How to Pray the Rosary With Children: Start With One Decade

Begin with one mystery, one intention and one decade. Tell your children which moment in the life of Jesus and Mary you are remembering, then pray an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory Be. This is one decade, not the complete Rosary. It gives your family a manageable place to begin.

Open the online Rosary companion to follow the prayers with tappable beads.

Before you begin

Choose a time when your family can pause for a few minutes. Let your children know what you will pray and where you will stop. You do not need everyone to know the words before starting.

Give your child a small part to take: naming an intention, announcing the mystery, reading a short Scripture passage or following the beads. An older child can lead a prayer if they want to.

Pray one decade together

  1. Make the Sign of the Cross. Ask God to help your family pray.
  2. Name a mystery and an intention. For example, the Annunciation recalls Mary receiving the angel’s message. You might pray for help trusting God in your own family.
  3. Pray the Our Father. Read the prayer text if you need it.
  4. Pray ten Hail Marys. Use a set of rosary beads or the online companion to keep your place. The Hail Mary page includes the words.
  5. Pray the Glory Be. Read the Glory Be, then close with the Sign of the Cross if you are stopping after this decade.

If your family continues to a full Rosary, follow its opening prayers, all five decades and concluding prayers. The USCCB guide explains the full sequence and the mysteries.

Explain the mystery in one sentence

The beads help you keep your place; the mysteries give you something to contemplate. Before a decade, briefly name the event and read a related passage from Scripture. You do not need to turn each decade into a lesson or ask your children to produce an answer.

When your children lose their place

Help them find the next bead and keep going. If someone needs a drink, a bathroom break or help settling down, pause. You can teach reverence without expecting the prayer time to be free of interruptions.

When a child does not want to join in

Explain the family practice calmly and give your child a clear, manageable role. Avoid asking them to prove that they feel prayerful. The aim is to help them learn how to pray and understand what your family is doing. For more guidance, read Teaching Your Kids to Pray Without Forcing It or How to Pray With Your Teenager.

Use the online Rosary together

Choose your language and mysteries, then begin. One person can hold the phone and tap a bead after each Hail Mary while everyone follows the words. If you need to stop, Save and Exit keeps your place on that device.

One thing to try this week

Choose one evening to pray a decade. Tell your children beforehand, invite an intention and pray together. At the end, thank them for joining you. Decide when you will return to it.
