Prayer for My Children

An Original Prayer

Lord, You gave me these children before I knew how to raise them, and some days I still don’t. Watch over them when I cannot. Guard them in the ordinary hours I don’t get to see.

Give me patience on the hard days and gratitude on the easy ones, and let me remember they are Yours before they are mine. Teach them to know You, even through my own mistakes. Let them always find their way back to You, and back home.

Amen.

About this prayer

This original Catholic prayer was written for the particular, quiet worry of parenting: the awareness that you cannot watch your children every hour, and the hope and trust that God does. It echoes Isaiah’s promise that “all your children shall be taught by the Lord” (Isaiah 54:13), a reminder that a parent’s responsibility is real, but it is not the whole story.

Parenting asks us to love, guide and protect our children while also accepting that there are places we cannot follow them and outcomes we cannot control. Prayer gives us a way to place those moments in God’s hands.

This prayer is meant to be short enough to pray in the doorway of a child’s room at night, in the car after dropping them off somewhere, or whenever you find yourself worrying about what you cannot see.

Scripture to pray with

  • Isaiah 54:13 – A reminder that God Himself teaches and watches over our children.
  • Psalm 127:3 – Children are a gift from the Lord, entrusted to our care rather than possessed by us.
  • Mark 10:14 – Jesus welcomes children to Himself and reminds us that they belong close to Him.

When to pray it

At bedtime, over a sleeping child, before they leave for school or a first sleepover, or in any of the small moments a parent hands their child over to a day they can’t fully control.
