Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring, and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all things for the love of Thee, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.

I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protector of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, and my secure refuge at the hour of death. Be Thou, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God Thy Father. I fear all from my own weakness, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thy goodness. Amen.

About this prayer

This Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart has appeared in Catholic prayer books for well over a century, part of a devotion that grew from the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the seventeenth century. Where the Memorare asks and the Act of Contrition confesses, this prayer does something different: it hands over. It doesn’t ask God for a favor so much as it offers everything, actions, trials, sufferings, in advance, without waiting to see what the day brings.

When to pray it

Many Catholics pray this on First Fridays, a devotion tied to promises associated with the Sacred Heart, or during June, traditionally observed as the month of the Sacred Heart. It also stands on its own anytime you want to reorient a hard season of life toward trust rather than control.
