The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
About this prayer
The Memorare has long been attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, though its exact authorship is uncertain; what’s clear is how many centuries Catholics have reached for it in urgent moments. Its opening line makes an argument before it makes a request: it reminds Mary, and the one praying, that her intercession has never failed anyone who asked.
It is one of the shortest prayers in common Catholic use, which is exactly why it travels so well, into hospital rooms, exam halls, and quiet 2 a.m. moments when nothing longer would come to mind.
When to pray it
Reach for this prayer in urgency: before a hard conversation, in a moment of fear, or whenever you need to ask for help quickly and simply. Many Catholics also pray it as part of a daily devotion to Our Lady.
